Our little girl inherited Josefina from one of her aunts, and she loves her! I wanted her to learn more about Josefina's story, so we ordered this book. She has really loved hearing about Josefina and her sisters! Since my daughter is pretty young, I have to paraphrase the story. As we read, it's more of a conversation rather than a true read aloud. However, I bet if you have older kiddos, they'd love reading the book on their own. It integrates a bit of Spanish and has a few lovely illustrations to expand the story. It's a great peek into life in New Mexico in the late 1800s for a Mexican American family.

Josefina is one of my daughter's favorite American girls and we recently taught a class on this particular girl. The themes of grieving a family member and learning bravery, as well as family loyalty are less than simple but well-told in these novels. Although not particularly literary, American Girl books are great at building interest, the plotlines are fairly tight, and they provide a great springboard for history lessons for homeschoolers or just for fun.
