The Rebels of Florida Leah K Oxendine Books Reviews

Awesome!!!! Great book on a great era.
Very emotive!
Great story setting in Florida where little is known about their role in the War.
Where to even start? This book was amazing over all.

The Rebels of Florida is set in Florida during the Civil War. It follows Zephyr at home as well as her father and uncle in the 7th regiment of the Army of Tennessee in the events leading up to the Battle of Missionary Ridge. For those who like historical novels, this is a must read.

The first thing that stood out to me when I was reading it was the authenticity of what it is like to having a father-in particular-to be serving in the army and being left at home. As a military kid, I connected immediately with Zephyr and the struggle of being at home and trying to hold everything together why he is gone. Leah Oxedine made that struggle real and did not glamorize the idea, earning major points in the authenticity category.

The second thing that stood out to me was the way that war and the fighting of the Civil War was portrayed. The characters fighting were fighting for the Rebel (confederacy) army, but they were painted in such a way that the struggle of the war was simply surviving it. These characters were fighting to get home to their families and were fighting because they had been called up. Oxedine brilliantly crafted her characters and storyline so that you rooted for the characters in the struggle of war. Once again the reality of war was not glamorized instead it was raw and gut-wrenching.

I couldn't put the book down. I wanted to keep reading and wanted more of it. I could hardly believe that it was over. I am eagerly looking forward to the next one of the series.

Civil War or history buffs, this is a book for you. Leah Oxedine introduces readers to a different side of the war that I bet many people have not even considered.
First, let me get this off my chest

WOW

/sobbing/

It took me a pretty long time to read through this book because of the author's skill in presenting it.

This is a book about war. It's not pretty, it's not easy, but it is a vitally important subject for teens and young adults to understand, and Ms. Oxendine presents it tastefully and gracefully, while not 'sanitizing' or 'purifying' it. War is not sanitary or pure and to show it as such, which I have seen done before, is to do a disservice to the human race as a general body. I was thoroughly impressed with The Rebels Of Florida and will probably be buying a paperback for my historian brother for Christmas.

Recommended for 17+. Contains some language and a good deal of violence.
If you're a history buff, and really like the Civil War era, you will enjoy reading Leah's books. She's a former homeschool student, a Civil War re-enactor, talented seamstress, musician, artist, fitness coach, owns a pretty decent sword collection (and knows how to use them) and, as you can see, an accomplished author. She has devoted many hours into writing her novels (#2 in this series is on the way) and makes sure details are correct.

Adding a bit of herself into the story, and making sure the historical facts match up with pain-staking accuracy (look at the intro to see how long she has been writing and how it's matured with the help of fellow historians and re-enactors), the story places you at one of our most crucial times as a country. The story is "fiction based on fact," inasmuch as the dialogue and characters are created; but the "could have been" scenarios are placed in the midst of factual accounts and places. Like many more-seasoned authors, she has researched many facets of her story on her own, and with the help of others, not only for accuracy but also to make sure that the reader is placed in the story and can imagine what they are reading with little difficulty.
Amazing. A 20-year-old author. Well researched and written. Lots of emotion, but also lots of facts.
A must read for all interested in war between states, both Northerners and Southerners. Amazing someone so young could author such. Glad to see her young heart is interested in southern history!
