I've looked over many surveys of London geography and history, and this small volume does a surprisingly good job of laying out a clear picture of the character of various areas within the metropolis. There are several useful maps, though the book has hardly any other illustrations, which might illuminate, for example, the architecture of each district. Still, I think it's an excellent first step in getting acquainted with the different parts of London, and though the history of each is of necessity very slim, one does get a sense of each areas evolution through time. Needless to say, get a cheap used copy. It will be well worth it.
