Christmas at Carnton A Novella Tamera Alexander 0025986293246 Books

Christmas at Carnton combines two of my favorite things, a Tamera Alexander book a holiday setting. Alexander spins a romantic story against a civil war backdrop and all the devastation that war encompasses. Men are away at war fighting, families are supporting the war effort from the home-front while hoping and praying their men survive. This story offered up new insight on what it must be like to await such news on a regular basis, day in day out, for weeks and months at a time.

Confederate sharpshooter Captain Jake Winston and war widow Aletta Prescott meet under these most trying circumstances. They happen upon each other at the beautiful Carnton Plantation, he under orders to help while recuperating from being shot, and she in search of a job to support herself, her young son and her unborn child.

I could feel the magnetic pull between them right away, though they fight the chemistry they have for various reasons, eventually love wins out. Insert sigh-worthy moment here. I love the way Aletta conducted herself and trusted God to take care of her. I can only wonder at her integrity and strong character to do so well under the circumstances. It was easy to see how Jake could fall for her. And handsome helpful Jake, so honorable in his tender dealings with Aletta. I want to say so much more about why I love him, but I don't want to spoil it. Let's just say he's a keeper!

Tamera Alexander's research is as always, impeccable. As much as I loved the story itself, and I did, the historical background and civil war setting took on a life of it's own. I know I'm reading a fantastic book when I'm as interested in the historical events portrayed as I am the characters. I loved every word, every chapter, the book as a whole and did not want it to end. Alexander tells such vivid and realistic a civil war story, I'll be waiting for the first book in this new series when it releases next year!

Christmas at Carnton A Novella Tamera Alexander 0025986293246 Books Reviews

Although I was disappointed that I wasn't able to meet Ms. Alexander in Nashville while I was traveling in the Fall, I wasn't disappointed in her newest novel, "Christmas at Carnton"!! Besides the incredible way she winds history with imagination, I love the soft and gentle way she presents love and romance, with the always underlying basis of what the Lord is doing in lives. A lovely tale of a recent war widow with a little son and another child on the way, the story gives HOPE at a time when everything looks bleak. The characters such as Tempy are touching and heartwarming. I look forward to the next Carnton novel with great anticipation! Mary Ann Young Robinson, Boise, Idaho
5 stars- What can I say, I just love Tamera Alexander’s novels. She has this magical way of drawing you into a place and time and connecting you with her characters that at times they almost seem real. Her stories will tug at your heartstrings and not let go until the story has ended. This story is no different. Life during the Civil War was unimaginably hard for everyone involved and Tamera does an amazing job telling the touching story of Aletta and Jake, two people struggling to survive in a world that makes little sense. This story was so well crafted and the characters seemed very genuine in their thoughts and actions. My favorite character was Aletta. Even though life kept throwing her grenades she kept throwing them right back, refusing to let them detonate her life. I admired her determination to not give up, even when things seemed at their worst.
Even though this story is billed as a novella, it reads like a novel. The story didn’t feel rushed like many novellas and the characters and story were very well developed. Tamera’s stories are always written with heart and emotion. I feel as though I can truly empathize with the characters and the struggles they are facing. This is a wonderful introduction to Tamera’s new Carnton series. I can’t wait to read the first novel in the series! If you have never read one of Tamera’s books, this is a great one to start with.
I received a copy of this book for free. I was not required to post a positive review and the views and opinions expressed are my own.
"Please do not make this more difficult on me than it already is."

Aletta Prescott is not only widowed, she has just lost her only source of income as a seamstress; making survival even that much harder for her family of almost three. Desperate to locate employment, facing property foreclosure on her home, she applies for a temporary pastry chef position at a large Franklin, Tennessee estate.

"At this point, we still have every reason to believe your full sight will return . . . . But the apprehension in the surgeon's expression . . . . told him a different story."

Captain Jake Winston has been an heralded Confederate sharpshooter until a bullet pierces his shoulder, followed by a devastating head injury. Ordered to assist a local Women's Relief Society auction while convalescing, he meets the lovely Aletta Prescott and her rambunctious six year old son. The draw between them is surprising, especially to Aletta, who tries her hardest to settle for a simple friendship with the handsome soldier. As Christmas approaches at Carnton, will the gift of love be found under the tree?
